Upon publication, Anne Brontë's final novel caused great controversy but has over time come to be considered a classic feminist novel. Set in nineteenth-century England, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a thought-provoking epistolary novel packed with lessons on love, faith and morality in a turbulent society.

When the attractive and mysterious Helen Graham moves into Wildfell Hall with her young son and sets up her artist's studio, she arouses village curiosity as well as the interest of farmer Gilbert Markham. Gilbert finds Helen's independence impossible to understand, until she allows him to read her diary and her troubled past is revealed.
